Moon Timing

Void of Course Moon (VOC) - Methods, Meaning, and Calculation

Void of Course Moon (VOC) means the Moon will not perfect a major aspect before it changes sign. Different traditions define the boundary differently, so the answer depends on the method you choose.

What is a Void of Course Moon?

A Void of Course Moon (VOC) is a timing condition. In most definitions, the Moon is VOC when it will not perfect a major aspect to a planet before it changes sign. Some rules allow out-of-sign perfections; others do not.

Why there are multiple VOC definitions

  • Different traditions use different aspect orbs (exact vs applying).
  • Some count only the seven traditional planets, others include Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
  • Some methods use fixed degree windows (13 or 30 degrees) instead of the sign boundary.

Our 10 VOC methods

We offer two planet sets and five methods each.

Traditional (7 planets)

  • T1 - Sign-boundary (exact): VOC if no exact major aspect perfects before the Moon enters the next sign.
  • T2 - Medieval/Horary (applying): VOC if no applying aspect perfects within moiety orbs before sign change.
  • T_LILLY - Lilly moiety: VOC if the next aspect is beyond moiety orb (out-of-sign allowed).
  • T_13 - 13 degree window: VOC if no major aspect perfects within the next 13 degrees of lunar motion.
  • T_30 - 30 degree window: VOC if no major aspect perfects within the next 30 degrees.

Modern (10 planets)

  • M1 - Sign-boundary (exact): Same as T1 but includes Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
  • M2 - Tight-orb (applying): Applying aspects only; outer planets use tighter orbs.
  • M_LILLY - Lilly moiety: Same as T_LILLY with outer planets included.
  • M_13 - 13 degree window: Same as T_13 with outer planets included.
  • M_30 - 30 degree window: Same as T_30 with outer planets included.

How we calculate VOC (short form)

  • Compute the Moon position and the next major aspect perfections for the chosen planet set.
  • Apply the selected method rules (sign boundary, applying with orbs, or degree window).
  • For Lilly methods we show last perfection (VOC start) and next perfection when available.
